Special Services Director Hired

At a special meeting on June 17, the Dripping Springs ISD Board of Trustees approved Superintendent Bruce Gearing’s recommendation of Susan Maxey as the district’s new Director of Special Services.  Ms. Maxey has been the Executive Director of Special Programs at Luling ISD since 2017. Ms. Maxey has nearly 30 years of experience in education-related fields. The DSISD Special Services Department oversees many services: Special Education, dyslexia, Section 504, response to intervention, homebound, and the 18-plus ACCESS program.


At Luling ISD, Ms. Maxey has led and set direction related to all aspects of Special Education, English as a second language, Section 504, and other programs. Prior to her work in Luling, Ms. Maxey was the Director of Professional Development at Hays CISD and worked in several roles at the Region XIII Education Service Center in Austin. She previously worked as an English teacher at two area middle schools, and also spent two years as an academic advisor at Austin Community College.


“Ms. Maxey’s energy and focus on building strong relationships will positively impact students, staff and parents,” said Dr. Gearing. “She is a student-centered educator and we believe she will be a positive and effective leader for our Special Services Department.”


Ms. Maxey received her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas and her master’s degree in educational administration from Southwest Texas State University. She also has completed 54 hours of doctoral studies in school improvement from Texas State University. She has multiple educational certifications.


Ms. Maxey is expected to start her duties July 15, 2019.
