Three DSISD elementary students placed in the top three of their respective grade levels in the KLRU Kids Writers Contest.
Winning first place in the fourth-grade division was Isabel Boldrick from Dripping Springs Elementary, with her story "The Heat Wave." Isabel won the top prize out of 102 fourth-grade entries. Will Stewart of Rooster Springs Elementary won first place at the fifth-grade level with his story "How the Normal Pencil Got Its Scent." Third place in the fifth-grade division went to Sophia Brink from Sycamore Springs Elementary for her story "A Walk Through Poem Forest." There were 58 total entries at the fifth-grade level.
The KLRU contest was open to Austin-area students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The local contest is designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning. Participants in the contest wrote and illustrated their stories. All of the entries in the contest are posted on KLRU's contest webpage.
The contest's winners and other entrants were honored at a reception on May 18 at the downtown Austin Public Library.
