On April 26-27, Dripping Springs High School debaters Campbell Melton and Max Bibeau competed at the 48th annual Tournament of Champions (TOC) hosted by the University of Kentucky. Campbell competed in Congressional Debate, and Max competed in Extemporaneous Speaking. The TOC is a prestigious tournament that only accepts entries from the country's best competitors. This year's TOC had more than 900 entries representing 40 U.S. states. To qualify, students must earn at least two "bids" throughout the year. Campbell qualified based on her performances at the University of Texas and Harvard tournaments. Max qualified based on his performances at the University of Texas and Churchill tournaments.
After 11 grueling hours of debate, Campbell advanced to the semifinal congress round, which means she placed among the top third of the 138 congressional debaters at the tournament.
Campbell and Max also have qualified for the UIL State Tournament in Persuasive Extemporaneous Speaking to be held May 29-30 at the University of Texas.
