Two DECA Students Qualify for International Conference
At the State DECA Conference Feb. 22, two of Dripping Springs High School's 17 qualifiers earned the right to advance to international competition, which marks a first for DSHS. In addition, Lily Sethre-Brink was elected to a state office.
Varun Verma will advance in Business Financial Services and Lily Sethre-Brink will compete in Marketing Communications. The DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) will be held in Atlanta in late April. At the state competition, each student complete a 100-question exam on the subject matter related to their event topic, then completed two role-play activities with a panel of judges. In a role play, the student is given a business scenario and 10 minutes to prepare, then plays out the scenario with a judge while simultaneously demonstrating mastery of specific topics.
Sethre-Brink was elected to one of the six state officer positions for Texas DECA to represent more than 16,000 DECA members in the state. She had to complete a test on DECA operations and Robert's Rules of Order. She then advanced through a formal interview process to earn the privilege of campaigning at the State Conference. She was elected from among the 4,000 attendees of the conference and will spend the next 12 months working toward the advancement of Texas DECA. Considering that the DSHS chapter of DECA is only three years old, this honor is especially impressive.
DECA is an international association that prepares emerging leaders for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, entrepreneurship, and management in high schools and colleges.
