Two DSHS Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists

September 13, 2023

Dripping Springs High School seniors Luke Bohan and William Johns have been named National Merit Semifinalists based on their performances on the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

The 16,000 semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing in February 2024, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.

In August, Bohan and Johns received the National Rural and Small Town Award from the College Board National Recognition Program for maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA and performing well on the PSAT/NMSQT®, PSAT™ 10, and/or AP® Exams.

Bohan is a member of the Tiger soccer team and plans to major in Biochemistry and become a doctor. Johns plays for the Tiger tennis team and hopes to study either Mechanical Engineering or Pre-Med at BYU.

To become a National Merit Finalist, students must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm their earlier performance on the qualifying test.
