DSHS Boys' Wrestling Captures Regional Championship; Nine Wrestlers Advance to State

The Dripping Springs High School boys’ wrestling team earned a second-straight regional championship at the Region IV-5A competition on April 17.
A total of nine wrestlers (8 boys, 1 girl) qualified for the state meet, highlighted by first-place finishes from Alec Rill (170 pounds) and Alyson Brownson-Welch (128 pounds). Rill defeated Mission Sharyland High School’s Moses Rodriguez in the title match with a fall at 5:48, while Brownson-Welch earned an 8-0 major decision over Corpus Christi King’s Zoe Fowler.
Earning runner-up regional finishes and advancing to the state meet were Hagen Shipley (120 pounds), Cody Barron (138 pounds), Daniel Mayes (160 pounds), Luke Norton (182 pounds), Grant Clarno (220 pounds), and Christian Prehar (285 pounds). Jefferson Guerrero (152 pounds) recorded a third-place finish to also advance to the state competition.
Guerrero and Norton will be making their third straight appearance at the state meet while Prehar, Mayes and Brownson-Welch will make their second-straight trip.
Joe Kirksey repeated as the Region IV-5A Coach of the Year.
The DSHS boys’ team totaled 234 team points to finish 123 points ahead of second-place Canyon High School.
The state tournament will be held Friday, April 23, at the Berry Center in Cypress.
