Three DSHS Students Advance to State Visual Arts Competition

February 11, 2021

Three Dripping Springs High School students advanced to the state Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) competition after submitting pieces at the regional meet that received all-area recognition.

Katherine Ferno and her piece “Hello My Darling,” Grace Maddux and her entry “Drowning,” and Melissa Richardson's “Radical Radiance” qualified for state after presenting their pieces in front of a judges’ panel.

At the regional meet, 19 total DSHS students submitted pieces and 18 earned medals.

Each year student pieces from DSHS are entered in the VASE area/regional competition, where they can receive different levels of recognition. The event is sponsored by the Texas Art Education Association. Students present their work and defend their pieces in front of a judges' panel; entries then receive a score ranging from 1 to 4, with 4 being "Superior." A Superior rating also is considered to be an "all-region" winner. From there, entries can be selected as "all-area," which advances them to the state competition.

Richardson will advance to the state competition for the third straight year while Ferno will make her second consecutive appearance.

The state event will be held virtually April 23-24.
