Fall Planning Update from Superintendent Washburn

Washburn Message Header

June 19, 2020

The big question on everyone's mind is: "What will school look like in the fall?" As we previously shared with parents, DSISD instructional leaders have been working diligently on developing plans for different potential learning scenarios. Our goal is two-fold; meeting the educational needs of all students and prioritizing the health and safety of students and staff. In addition to planning for the educational needs of students, we are refining our student support services processes, including cleaning protocols, transportation, and meal service.

This week, Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner Mike Morath indicated that Texas public schools should plan to resume in-person instruction this fall while allowing for flexibility and parent choice. Next week, TEA will be providing districts with specific guidelines for the fall. Once we receive this direction, we will refine our plans. We will apply feedback received in the recent parent survey, and gain additional input through parent/staff focus group meetings.

We plan to open our schools in the fall to our students. We must do so under the health and safety guidance from the state and TEA. We recognize that providing choice for families is essential. Some families may prefer for their children to continue remote learning. We are working on the development of our next generation of remote learning. Our remote learning 2.0 system will be more structured and robust than what we implemented in the spring. We also recognize the need to be adaptable, should the health circumstances require a shift back to remote learning.

We want to provide parents with an additional opportunity to provide us with feedback on their concerns about returning to school in the fall. We have created an opportunity through Thought Exchange for parents to share feedback and a link is being emailed. We will continue to update our DSISD community on our plans for the 2020-21 school year throughout the summer.

Thank you for your support of Dripping Springs ISD.
