DSHS Paw Print Honored as Best of Show
April 21, 2020
The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) awarded Dripping Springs High School's Paw Print student newspaper a “Best in Show” designation among all entrants in the “Newspaper–Broadsheet” category. The Paw Print was chosen first amongst all entries of that format submitted from across the country this spring to the competition. NSPA recently announced the awards with a video ceremony presentation due to cancellation of its annual conference.
The Paw Print is produced monthly from October through December and February through May. The eight-page broadsheet-style newspaper is created by a staff of 13 students, under the direction of Student Media and Journalism teacher Jessica Stamp. Student editors are: Tessa Stigler, Editor-in-Chief; Cadence Russell, Online Editor; Rigley Willis, Sports Editor; and Andrew Spiegel, Entertainment Editor. The November issue 2019 was submitted for the contest.
The “Best of Show” competition is held at all national conventions sponsored by the National Scholastic Press Association. The number of entries and places awarded may change from year to year, depending on overall convention attendance. This year, the competition was opened up to non-attendees given the convention's cancellation. According the NSPA, “the Best of Show award does not signify a ranking of national excellence, but rather overall excellence among the attendees and entries.”
