DSHS Girls' and Boys' Teams Qualify for State Cross Country Meet

Both the DSHS girls' and boys' teams qualified for the state cross country championships based on their results on Oct. 28 at the Region IV Meet in Corpus Christi. The girls' squad finished in second place, while the boys' team was third.
The girls, who finished behind Boerne Champion HS and ahead of Austin LBJ HS in the final team standings, were led by junior Maddie Livingston who placed third individually in a time of 19:33.35. Other Tigers who counted toward the team score were sophomore Karsten Bobb in 13th place in 19:55.42, sophomore Marleena Mickel (21st in 20:23.58), senior Ellie Hovre (27th in 20:30.69), and senior Kora Meyers (32nd in 20:48.33). Juniors Caroline Russey (59th in 21:51.34) and Madison Tafoya (68th in 22:00.68) also competed for the Tigers.
The boys finished in third behind Boerne Champion HS and Lockhart HS in the team standings. Scoring for the team were junior Caleb Lopez (ninth place in 16:27.48), sophomore Mason Simons (27th in 17:05.69), sophomore Brant Melton (30th in 17:08.73), senior Christopher Cohen (48th in 17:43.39), and freshman Austin Wolfe (54th in 17:47.64). Wolfe was the third-best finisher of all freshman runners. Senior Kyler Meyers (76th in 18:13.72) and sophomore Dominic Gearing (131st in 19:22.51) also ran for the Tigers.
The state cross country meet is Saturday, Nov. 9, at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. The 5A girls race is scheduled to begin at 1:10 p.m., followed by the boys race at 1:50 p.m. In 2018, the DSHS girls team finished 10th at the state meet, and the boys finished in ninth.
