Communication Tools Include Emergency Notification Options for Parents

Dripping Springs ISD offers parents options for emergency and time-sensitive notifications via email, phone calls, or texts through the Blackboard Communications system. Parents may set notifications for multiple phone numbers: home, cell, and/or work. Selecting notification preferences is one step in the annual enrollment verification process that is completed online in August. Initially, all contact numbers listed in the student’s Skyward Family Access account are used as a default, but parents may go into their Blackboard account to select preferences. Parents’ logins should be the same as it is in Family Access. Those who do not know their password may request an email providing a reset option. Attendance notifications can be set separately from emergency notifications. This account can be used with the DSISD app as well.
It is important to understand that, in the case of a situation that warrants an alert, the district must collect and verify information to ensure it is accurate before sending a message. This may involve contacting the school, the district's School Resource Officers, emergency responders, law enforcement or others, depending on the situation.
Parents also can subscribe to receive alerts that are sent regarding webpage updates. This can be done by logging into their Blackboard account, then clicking on “My Options,” then “Subscriptions.” Parents may either select “Site,” then chose appropriate campus, or click on “Other Areas” and choose a specific webpage. Step-by-step directions are available online. Non-parents or vendors may subscribe to web alerts and should begin by clicking the “Register” button. A written tutorial explains the process.
More information on setting both of these types of alerts (phone/text/email and website updates) can be viewed on the Notifications page on the DSISD website. To set deliver preferences in Blackboard, log on to account, then click on "Account" on top toolbar, then "Delivery Preferences." Settings can be the same or different for "Emergency" and "Attendance." Options are push notifications (must have app), text, phone call, and email.
The district and schools use other tools for communicating with parents. Email messages that are not time-sensitive typically are sent through Family Access. These emails come from "DSISDnews" or the school abbreviation followed by "news" (ie. "DSHSnews"). In addition, teachers can send messages through the new Canvas learning management system.
