Board Meetings to Include Additional Public Forum Opportunities
September 9, 2019
As a result of legislation that went into effect Sept. 1, the format of DSISD board meetings will be slightly modified.
Every board meeting will include a public forum during which time those in attendance may speak about items that are posted on the agenda. While it has been DSISD’s practice to have a public forum at every regular board meeting held on the fourth Monday of the month, moving forward this opportunity will be added to workshop meetings (previously called agenda review) that occur the third Monday of each month, as well as any special meetings the board holds.
Another opportunity will be added at each meeting for attendees to speak on items that are not included on that meeting’s agenda. This second public forum session may be limited in total time, although each speaker may speak for up to three minutes at any of these public forums. Delegations of more than five persons may appoint one person to present their views before the Board and are permitted up to five minutes to speak. The public forum for non-agenda items will be listed separately and the length and placement will be at the discretion of the board.
Board members will listen to comments but only the Board president, as the designated spokesperson, may respond to the speaker if required. Responses are limited to: correcting misstatements of fact presented by the speaker, referring the speaker to applicable board policy, or placing the item on a future board agenda for discussion if not listed on the current board agenda.
