Seven DSHS track athletes qualified to compete at the 5A UIL State Track and Field Meet at the University of Texas on May 10. Leading the Tigers' efforts was junior Avery Kalsu who finished fourth in the 400 meters in a time of 56.46 seconds. With that time Kalsu re-set her own DSHS school record for the second time this spring. Senior Bobby Holt qualified for the state meet for the second consecutive year and finished in sixth place in the 800 meters in a time of 1:55.33. Holt's race concluded a decorated career at DSHS that included a fourth place finish in the 1,600 meters at the 2018 state meet and back-to-back sixth place finishes at the state cross country meet in 2017 and 2018.
Freshman Marleena Mickel finished in eighth place in the 3,200 meters in a time of 11:24.79. Earlier this season Mickel also qualified for the state cross country meet, finishing as the fastest runner on DSHS's 10th place team. The DSHS boys' 4x400 meter relay team wrapped up the state competition for the Tigers by finishing in ninth place in 3:23.79. The relay team was made up of seniors Zyle Nance and Ty Kaatz and juniors Andres Perry and Tyler Herron.
