State competitors for the Judicial section were Natalie Chavez, Hayden Betzing, Norah Rinehart and Simonne Swanson. The Judicial section allows students to participate in a mock-trial setting. They act as judges, attorneys, witnesses, and bailiffs in a series of rounds in which they compete against other teams as either the Defense or Prosecution for Trial Court or the Appellant or Appellee for Appeals Court.
Audrey Balsdon and Arysta Visser represented DSHS in the Legislative section. The Legislative event involves participants identifying issues for legislation, bill writing, debating, bill presentation, and participation in a legislative body.
Youth in Government is a national program of the YMCA that involves thousands of teens nationwide in state-organized, model-government programs. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in experiential civic engagement and to, quite literally, practice democracy.
