    ART I

    Fall 2016-Spring 2017

    Creative Visual Studies:

    Students enrolled in this course generally fall into one of two categories: for some this will be their last formal training in visual art and art appreciation, while for many this course serves as an introduction to further studies of art. Some students are surprised to find reading and writing to be central to the art curriculum. Parental understanding of the course content can be very important in helping students make the transition into a serious, studious mode.

    Course Content and Goals:

    This course is designed to do more than develop and improve the student’s basic skills in drawing, composition, design, color theory, painting techniques and sculptural concepts. This course also focuses on creative problem solving, and higher order thinking skills. Other areas deal with the study of art history, artists, cultures, and evaluation processes used in the critical analysis of visual art. While my goal is not to create “experts” in any one media, technique, or philosophy, I do plan to form the basis for further development in these disciplines.  

    Grades:

    Art is a participation course. Students must be in their seats, on time, and on task. Six week grades will be averages from weekly grades. Time management and following directions for your assignments area assessed as part of the weekly grade. Participation grades evaluate effort, time management, following directions, criteria for lesson, originality, and the overall quality of the work.   

    Grading will be as follows:

    30% Studio work progress/self-evaluations

    70% Studio work/Tests

    Final project grades will be assessed by a rubric based on criteria developed by the teacher.

    Late Work:

    Projects will be accepted up to one week after its due date however, class time can no longer be used to complete a project. Extensions will not be accepted without prior approval from Mrs. Vickery. Late work due to absences – see student handbook.

    Supplies and Art Fee:

    Students will pay a fee of $30 for art supplies. A pencil and eraser should be obtained by the students.

    • Please read and sign attached art fee letter. (Supplies and fees due by Friday,           September 9, 2016)

    Classroom Management:

    The following are consequences that are posted in my room and will be followed before a student is sent to an administrator:

    1st offence- verbal reprimand or warning by the teacher

    2nd offence- assigned teacher consequence and teacher/student conference

    3rd offence- assigned teacher consequence and telephone call to the student’s parents

    4th offence- referred to the office for persistent violation of rules and schedule a teacher/parent conference

    Conference Period:

    The best time to reach me is during my conference period from 1:04-2:38 (A day) and 10:37-12:10 (B day). Students may come to my room in the morning from 8:20-8:50 for tutorials or to work on projects.

    Unless your teacher specifically tells you that you may work with other students on an assignment, you are expected to work on all assignments by yourself, using only your own thoughts, ideas and reasoning.

    Pre AP Art 1 Overview 2016-17


    PRE AP ART 1

    Fall 2016 – Spring 2017

    Course content and goals:

    Pre AP is a beginning survey of the elements and principles of design, art appreciation, and art history. Most students in this class will have taken art classes before and therefore will be ready for accelerated instruction. Students are expected to have significant interest, skills, and dedication to the visual arts in this course. The Pre AP program has an emphasis on competition and display of work. Students will work on projects, study art history, learn various techniques and procedures, and will be tested over their knowledge. Exploration of various media is emphasized in Pre AP. The general objectives of the Pre AP Art 1 program is to evaluate art work based on specific criteria, understand and use a journal as a planning guide, use local museums and resources available, understand and apply proper presentation skills, complete weekly outside assignments, and recognize commonality (concentration) among a grouping of art works.

             Course Description:

        Students will pursue the investigation of the three-dimensional form in ceramics and sculpture. It is my belief that quality works can be achieved if one focuses on visual thinking, creativity, skill development, study of historical and cultural traditions and critical analysis. The process of investigation, growth and discovery, personal interest, and time and effort are key elements essential to having a successful and meaningful experience with this program. This course is designed to guide students in taking informed risks and being inventive in making images and objects that reflect a students own personal journey.

                Exhibition and Competitions:

             Students are required to compete and display work throughout the year,
                 two of which are the Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE), and the Austin/                                San Antonio Rodeo Student Art Competition. Students will also be given the                              choice to enter and compete in several other events throughout the year as they
                 come up.  

               Critiques:

    Critiques are an integral part of this course that include group and individual
    student critiques and instructional conversations with the teacher that enable students to analyze and discuss their own artworks and those of their peers. Critiques take place at the due date of each major assignment. Each student must show their work and briefly discuss their intent. The class is then expected to provide positive feedback and offer suggestions for improvement. Students are expected to use professional art terminology during critiques and classroom discussions.

    Copyright:

    Students are not allowed to work from published photographs or other copyrighted work. Copyright issues are discussed with students early on- they are made aware of the legal issues involved with working from someone’s published work. As students explore stylistic and thematic ideas, they will be guided to create their own work so that it avoids duplication, redundancy, trite, and over-used images. Any published work must serve the vision of the student in a way that moves beyond copying and becomes students original statement.

     

    Resource Requirements:

    The school ensures that each student has access to art materials and resources necessary to meet the standards of this course,however, a supply fee of $40 is required to purchase materials for sculptural supplies such as clay and wood. Additional fees are required to cover the cost of the VASE and Rodeo art competitions. (You will be notified of fee amounts as they become available).

    Summer Assignments:

    Students entering my AP and/or Studio Art 3-D Design course have prerequisite work they must complete over the summer. Toward the end of each spring semester, I meet with students interested in enrolling in my class. Expectations, the nature of the class, and the level of commitment necessary to be successful are discussed.
