  • Greetings and welcome to the Sycamore Springs Middle School Theatre Department! We are very fortunate to have a school faculty and administration that realizes the importance of cultivating theatre at the middle school level.The chance to produce theatre is a privilege, one with the power to move audiences of all ages. Our mission is to instill a deep respect and knowledge of the craft of theatre in its many forms.

     
    COURSE OVERVIEW
     

    Introduction to Theatre Arts:

    This is an introductory theatre course. Over the year we explore and develop the basics of theatre, including building an ensemble, movement & pantomime, what is expected of an actor, using the voice, musical theater, staging, auditioning, improvisation, monologues and duet acting scenes, script writing, memorization, introduction to safe stage combat and audience & theatre etiquette. This course provides the opportunity students to get a taste of the theatre world and explore their own creativity.


    Technical Theatre & Advanced Technical Theatre:

    This class explores stage craft, theatrical design, set building, lights, sound, and backstage production. This course provides the opportunity for students to explore the skills and artistry necessary to make theatre come alive from behind the scenes.


    Advanced Theatre Arts:

    Students in the Advanced Theater Arts Class must have taken Introduction to Theatre as a prerequisite.  This class will require that students work in all areas of theatre arts including basic stage movement, voice, pantomime, improvisation, audition techniques, what is expected of an actor, role preparation, choral reading, script writing, performance, theatre history, technical theatre, musical theatre, and readers theatre. Students will perform monologues and duet acting scenes. Students will be required to attend one theatrical performance per school year.



    Theatre Production:

    Students in the Theatre Production Class must have taken Introduction to Theatre and Advanced Theatre or audition for a spot in the class.  The focus of this class is production. Students will use all the techniques and tools they have learned to audition, direct, and stage shows.  This is the UIL One Act Play Preparation class. Additionally students will be required to attend two theatrical performances per school year.

     

    Musical Theatre:

    This course offers many project based learning experiences that help develop the skills necessary to be a "triple threat"- a strong actor, singer, and dancer. Students will learn the basics of Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Music Theory, Voice, Acting, and Showmanship. The will perform in a community showcase at the end of the year.
