Debate I, Debate II and Debate III –

November  2016

I just want to say I am so glad your student has decided to participate with the DSHS Speech and Debate team. This is an exciting time to be a part of this growing program and I look forward to working with each child to help them achieve the goals they have set for themselves! Please contact me if you ever have a question or need additional clarification on something.

December 2016 – Holiday Elderly Service Project*
Last year, it came to my attention that several people in the two nursing homes around Dripping Springs would not have anyone to acknowledge them or celebrate the holidays with them. I thought that was so very sad, and I brought this to the debate's team's attention and we collected items, wrapped them and delivered them to those fine institutions, so that our local residents would be remembered and included in the holiday festivities.

This is totally voluntary. But if you and your family would like to contribute, please do not send in money, but we would be happy to receive any of the items listed below, and we will wrap them and deliver them to our local residents.  Please send in any donations by Tuesday, December 6th and we will make deliveries on Friday December 9th.

-Blankets

- Chapstick                - men’s hair combs               -Nail polishes and nail files

FUNDRAISER**

Our Speech and Debate fundraiser is over! As soon as I have a delivery date, I will let you all know. The funds we raise will go towards entry fees and travel fees for tournaments in the spring of 2017.

Tournament/Workshop participation:

All Debate students are required to attend at least one tournament or workshop per semester. If students are in Debate II, they must attend two events, Debate III, three events, etc.

Debate I students are currently learning about persuasion. They are participating in a Congressional Debate using the Texas Forensic Association's Fall Docket of legislation. Students selected bills and resolutions on the docket and then researched and write three minute persuasive speeches on each one they selected in our mock congress.

In December, we will begin learning about LD Debate and then have in class LD Debates in January.

Debate II, Debate III and Debate IV students will continue working on building up the extemporaneous speaking files and individual evidence assignments due on a weekly basis. They will also start researching and writing their TAPT School Bus Safety Speech, which will be  their final exam.

Advanced Debaters also have extemp. articles due on November 30 and December 7.  We are using a new extemp. article storage system this year, so the process should be more streamlined and easier for the students. These are summative grades.
