Debate I, Debate II and Debate III –
I just want to say I am so glad your student has decided to participate with the DSHS Speech and Debate team. This is an exciting time to be a part of this growing program and I look forward to working with each child to help them achieve the goals they have set for themselves! Please contact me if you ever have a question or need additional clarification on something.
Our Speech and Debate fundraiser is almost over! The sale ends on October 18th (students should bring back the money and the order forms on 10/19 or 10/20!). Checks should be payable to DSHS! I am not asking students to sell a certain amount; I am just asking them to do their best. The funds we raise will go towards entry fees and travel fees for tournaments in the spring of 2017.
All Debate students are required to attend at least one tournament or workshop per semester. If students are in Debate II, they must attend two events, Debate III, three events, etc.
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) will be hosting a Student Activity Conference at the University of Texas at Austin on October 22nd. If your student is interested in this workshop, they need to sign up in my class room ASAP and then make sure they have returned their tan permission slip packets to me to be able to attend. We will meet at DSHS on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 8 AM and travel by school bus to UT. We will return to DSHS around 3 PM. Students will need to bring a sack lunch or money for lunch at a fast food restaurant. I am also asking students to wear a DSHS shirt if they have one and bring pen and paper to take notes at this conference.
Debate I students are currently learning about persuasion. They are writing one minute persuasive speeches and will presenting them at the end of this week and the beginning of next week. Next we will focus on Congressional Debate. Students will select bills and resolutions on a given docket and then research and write three minute persuasive speeches that they will use in a mock congress.
Debate II, Debate III and Debate IV students will begin preparing for competition-- the Reagan TFA tournament (Oct 14-Oct.15). Details will be coming home soon. The sign up sheet is up in my classroom and students must sign up by Friday, Sept. 30 if they plan to attend.
Advanced Debaters also have extemp. articles due on October 19 and November 2. We are using a new extemp. article storage system this year, so the process should be more streamlined and easier for the students. These are summative grades.
