Debate I, Debate II, Debate III and Debate IV –
September 19- September 23
I just want to say I am so glad your student decided to participate with the DSHS Speech and Debate team this year. We are planning to have an exciting year, full of preparation and competitions, where our students had the chance to show off their skills and shine.
Debate I students are in the process of wrapping up in class Public Forum Debates and we are watching a documentary about a high school speech and debate team called "Rise and Shine." Next, we will work on extemporaneous speaking. The students will learn how to construct a speech, the critical organizational elements, how to select the best sources to support the points they are trying to make, and watch national final rounds and constructively critique them. Then the students will sign up for a topic of their choosing, research and write a speech and then present that speech to the class. Speeches should be presented around Sept. 29/ Sept. 30.
We also have the UIL Student Activity Conference on October 22nd at the University of Texas. We will be taking a school bus from DSHS if your student is interested in attending this conference. Remember, students in Debate I are required to attend one conference or tournament a semester. Their attendance counts as a summative grade. There are no fees involved with this conference and students should bring snacks and money for lunch at a fast food restaurant in Austin on our way home. More details will be sent out soon regarding this conference and I will be putting a sign up sheet up in my classroom, so talk to your student and see if they are interested in attending.
Debate II, Debate III and Debate IV students will begin preparing for competition-- the Reagan TFA tournament (Oct 14-Oct.15). Details will be coming home soon. The sign up sheet is up in my classroom and students must sign up by Friday, Sept. 30 if they plan to attend.
Advanced Debaters also have extemp. articles due on Sept. 22 and Oct. 5. We are using a new extemp. article storage system this year, so the process should be more streamlined and easier for the students. These are summative grades.
