Junior Year

Meet with your counselor and revisit and tweak your 4 year plan including your academy.  Course selection is very important to colleges; they want to see you challenging yourself academically. 

Make good grades – focus on your GPA.  This is the last semester to impact your GPA for college admissions.  Take challenging classes.  Focus on your interests.

Get or stay involved in extracurricular activities.  Seek leadership positions– see 9th grade

Ask for letters of recommendation – from teachers and counselor. Give plenty of time and fill out a recommendation form to ensure a great letter. Recommendation forms can be found in the counseling center.  Don’t forget to thank your letter writers.

Contact college choices - Get online and make an appointment with colleges to arrange an in-depth college visit.  Let our attendance secretary know when you are planning your trip.

Scholarships – intensify scholarship search.   Apply to local as well as national scholarships.

Take the PSAT – It counts for National Merit this year. Compare your scores with your previous scores. Take the SAT/ACT. 

NCAA – Check with NCAA if you want to play sports in college.  www.eligibilitycenter.org

Military – Check with the military if you want to apply.  www.defense.gov

Plan your summer – Job, volunteer, internship, shadowing, competitions, camps, travel! -see 9th grade

Keep your academic (high school and college) information. Include test scores. Tag with a large “11” – see 9th grade.  Write application and scholarship deadlines on your envelope.

Summer before 12th grade

Complete your summer reading and any summer assignments (check HS website)

Write down any activities and update your activities resumes and community service logs. See 9th grade

Take an SAT or ACT prep class if you need to amp up your score before you re-test.  Don’t forget that College Board offers free test review online.

Volunteer in the community and/or get a part time job –see 9th grade

Email and call professionals in your field of interest and arrange an internship or shadowing opportunity.   Ask questions.  Follow up with a thank you card.
